Pyogenic granuloma - Picture, Treatment and cause of Pyogenic granuloma

Pyogenic granulomas are a benign overgrowth of blood vessels. They present as rapidly growing pinkish red nodules which are friable and readily bleed.

They may follow trauma and are often found on the fingers and lips. They are best excised to exclude an amelanotic malignant melanoma.

Granuloma Pyogenicum is a rapidly growing, vascular, fleshy, granulomatous nodule (sessile or pedunculated) which may occur anywhere on the body. The lesion may be smooth or ulcerated and is bathed in sero-purulent secretion. Its size varies from that of a pea to an almond.

Causes of Pyogenic granuloma

Trauma and pyogenic infection are the probable causes. According to Crocker, it is an exaggeration of proud flesh.

Treatment of Pyogenic granuloma

Treatment consists of surgical removal and/or electro-cauterization.
