Hot Tub Filter
Hot tub filter are necessary for keeping your hot tub clean. The filter should be cleaned at least once a month with a hose and, if needed, filter cleaning solution. The safety cover should also be wiped down about once a month. Drain and refill the hot tub with fresh water once every three months.
Ideally, filters should be replaced every 12 months but, if you are able let your filters dry between uses they will last longer. For this reason it is sensible to keep two sets of filters and alternate their use with each clean.
Types of filters
- Diatomaceous Earth Filters are made of grids of extremely fine mesh that are coated with diatomaceous earth.
- Sand Filters use sand as a filter medium.
- Cartridge Filters are the most common filters. The cartridge's are made with a fine, pleated mesh material (usually dacron).
How to Measure Hot Tub Filters
Measure the outside diameter (width) of the filter cartridge (in inches or centimetres), that is the maximum distance from one side to the other. Measure the length of the filter cartridge from end cap to end cap. Include the thickness of the caps but do not include handles or screw threads in the measurement.
After all that, if you are still having trouble identifying the correct filter, count the number of pleats! It might take a while but the pleat count determines the filtration area of the filter and so enables you to distinguish between filters with the same dimensions.
Filter Cleaning & Replacement
A hot tub filter cleans the water in a unit and also prevents the hot tub pump from getting clogged with both microscopic and large particles that can threaten your hot tub investment.
Filters can be removed in several ways. Here again, it's best to check your owner's manual or manufacturer's Web site for removal instructions.
The filter can be cleaned with a variety of specialized filter cleaning products, but overnight soaking products require the least amount of work. Choose a product, simply soak the filter overnight and rinse it thoroughly with a hose.
Rotate Your Spa Filters
Use the filter rotation method-- while cleaning your dirty filter, swap it with a clean dry spare. With this system you'll never have to wait to use your spa, and your filters will last longer.
