Wool vs. cotton

Even though there are many differences between wool and cotton clothes, there is something that is common among them. Both of them are natural fibers and are still ranked high on the fashion list. Natural fibers are almost always in fashion and it is no wonder that wool and cotton clothes have stood the test of time for a very long time now.

Differences between Wool and Cotton clothes

Advancing science has given us several blends of cotton and wool that has made clothing made from both these natural fibers extremely comfortable to wear. For instance these days the wool that is available is not like the scratchy wool that was available during the earlier days. There are in fact several blends of wool that are available nowadays. Some of them include wool jersey, cashmere and wool crepe. Wool is no longer the heavy material it was and is now more or less convenient to wear almost any time of the year, excepting in places where the climate is very hot.

Wool has also got one more advantage in the sense that it returns to its original shape quickly even after being stretched or folded for a long time. Cotton is the softer natural fabric and perhaps the most sought after by consumers. Even the formal wear segment which has been dominated by wool is slowly converting to cotton as time progresses. These days even suits are being created out of specially made cotton.
Cotton has been popular for over centuries now. Although it’s exact birth date is still a matter of debate several historical references point out to its use by ancient civilizations in Egypt and South America. The one area where cotton loses out to wool is in the fact that unlike wool cotton does not retain its shape after being stretched or folded. Another advantage that wool has over cotton is that wool does not fade easily while cotton does so.

In the ultimate analysis both cotton and wool have their own advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to choosing from amongst the two, it would mostly boil down to your personal choice.
