How to hem a pair of pants
Most of you will be surprised to know that you need not be an expert in tailoring in order to hem a pair of pants. You will just need to have the necessary interest and some skills with the needle and thread in order to accomplish this job. There are certain things that you need to look for even before you thread the needle. First of all make sure that the fabric that you will be sewing is spotlessly clean. If it is not so, then you should proceed with the hemming after your wash the pant.
Do it yourself - Hem a Pant
The second step involves marking the length up to which you want to hem your pant. You will then need to turn the pants inside out. The hem should lay evenly all around the area where your ankles would be should you wear the pant. Make sure that you have the correct size needle. This is an important aspect which many of us tend to ignore. You must remember that different types of fabric need different sizes of needles. Fairly tough fabrics such as denim would need a larger needle while shorter or smaller needles will be enough for softer fabrics such as polyester or cotton.
You must also take care to ensure that you buy a thread which matches the fabric’s color. The thread also should be durable but at the same time not too thick. You can then start sewing the hem by inserting the needle into the fabric. You can then repeat the process from the other side returning the needle through the pant’s hem area. The stitch should be fairly long enough. Ideally a quarter inch stitch can be used for this purpose. You will also need to make sure that the lengths of the stitches, both inside and outside of the pant are equal throughout. Once you are through with the sewing process you can then wash and press the pair of pants. All that you need to do in order to hem a pant is to follow these few simple steps.
